Mrigasen the fisherman, giver of fearlessness: in Shirish village of Avanti lived a fisherman named Mrigasen. Going to fish in the Kshipra river, he took a vow from Muni Yashodhar not to kill the first fish caught in his net. A large fish came into his net five times but he did not take it. Seeing him return empty-handed, his angry wife 'Ghanta' shut the door. He slept outside on old wood after reciting the Namokar mantra, and died in the night of a snakebite; his wife too, resolving that he be her husband in the next life, burned to death on the same pyre. In Vishala city ruled King Vishvambhar with Queen Vishvaguna. There lived merchant Gunapal and his wife Dhanshri with a daughter. Mrigasen's soul entered Dhanshri's womb. The minister Narmabharma sought Gunapal's daughter for his son Narmadharma; the merchant left his wife with his friend Shridatt and moved to Kaushambi with his daughter and some wealth. A young monk coming for alms said seeing Dhanshri, 'some unlucky one is in her womb,' but Muni Shivgupt said, 'your guess is wrong; a righteous son is in her womb who will marry a princess.' Hearing this, Shridatt out of envy resolved to kill the child. At birth Dhanshri fainted; Shridatt gave the child to a Chandala to kill, who left it in a safe place. Shridatt's brother-in-law Indradatt, hearing from cowherds, took the child. Learning this, Shridatt deceitfully brought his sister and nephew and again bribed the Chandala to kill him, who out of pity left him in a cave by the river, whence the cowherd chief Govind took him. One day Shridatt, on pretext of a message, sent the youth Dhankirti home carrying a letter that read, 'poison and kill the bearer of this letter.' Dhankirti, the fisherman's soul, tied the letter round his neck and set off; resting under a tree, the courtesan Anangsena — the fish's soul — came to pick flowers, read the letter, and with her eye-kohl altered the words to: 'give my daughter Shrimati in marriage to the letter-bearer.' On waking he delivered it, and at an auspicious hour he was wed to Shrimati. Learning this, Shridatt posted a man to kill him at the Parvati temple outside the village. He sent his son-in-law with worship materials; on the way his brother-in-law Mahabal took the materials and went to the temple, and Mahabal was killed. Frustrated, he told his wife to kill his son-in-law Dhankirti; she made poisoned laddus clean and plain laddus soiled, telling their daughter to serve the clean ones to the son-in-law and the soiled to her father, then left to bathe. Out of modesty the daughter served the soiled laddus to her husband and the clean to her father; learning of Shridatt's death, his wife too ate the poisoned laddus and died. Hearing of Dhankirti's virtue and celibacy, the king married his own daughter to him with dowry and made him royal treasurer. Gunapal, hearing of his son's fortune, met him; later the family paid homage to Muni Yashodhar and heard the tale of Dhankirti's past life. Dhankirti had been the fisherman, wife Ghanta became Shridatt's daughter Shrimati, the fish became the courtesan Anangsena; Dhankirti took initiation, and so did Shrimati and Anangsena. Dhankirti, renouncing at death, became an Ahamindra in Sarvarthasiddhi and will become a Kevali and attain liberation; Shrimati and Anangsena also went to heaven. Truly, from the wish-fulfilling tree of the dharma of compassion one gets the desired fruit.
