जब से खड़ा हूँ तब से कोई नहीं निकला- जङ्गल में साधु ध्यान कर रहे थे, तभी एक हिरन दौड़ता हुआ निकला, साधु का ध्यान बटा, उन्होंने देखा कि यह तो सताया हुआ है, अगर शिकारी ने आकर पूँछा तो क्या होगा, ऐसा सोच ही रहे थे कि शिकारी आ गया, साधु तत्काल खड़े हो गये जैसे ही शिकारी ने पूँछा कि यहाँ से कोई हिरन निकला है? तो साधु ने कहा जब से मैं खडा हूँ, तब से कोई नहीं निकला। जब हिरण निकला था तब साधु बैठे हुये थे, अर्थात् युक्ति पूर्वक जीव की रक्षा की और अपने सत्यधर्म की रक्षा की।

A sage was meditating in a forest when a hunted deer rushed past, breaking his concentration. Foreseeing the hunter's question, the sage rose to his feet; when the hunter asked whether a deer had passed, the sage replied, 'Since I have been standing here, none has passed'—for the deer had gone by while he was seated. Thus by cleverness he saved the creature's life while upholding his vow of truth.
