एक शाम बूढ़ी गाय धीरे-धीरे चलकर घर की ओर आ रही थी, इतने में एक शेर सामने आ गया और गाय से कहा मैं बहुत दिनों से भूखा हूँ अतः आज अपनी भूख शांत करूँगा, तब गाय ने शेर से कहा! मैं अपने बछड़े को दूध पिला आऊँ फिर तुम मुझे खा लेना, शेर हँसा और बोला! कि तुम मुझे धोखा देना चाह रही हो, गाय ने कहा मैं बछड़े की सौगन्ध खाकर कहती हूँ, दूध पिला कर अवश्य आ जाऊँगी, शेर ने बोला ठीक है, जैसे ही गाय घर पहुँची और बछड़े से दूध पीने को कहा, तो बछड़े ने देर से आने का कारण पूँछा, बताने पर उसने कहा, कि आपके स्थान पर मैं जाऊँगा, आग्रह करने पर भी उसने दूध नहीं पिया और दोनों शेर के पास चल दिए, एक के स्थान पर दो को आता देख शेर खुश हुआ, बछड़ा कहता है शेर पहले मुझे खायगा और माँ सींगों से उसे पीछे करके कहती है कि शेर पहले मुझे खायगा, गाय-बछड़े के प्रेम ने शेर का हृदय परिवर्तन कर दिया और उनका वात्सल्य देखकर दोनों को खाने का इरादा छोड़ दिया।

One evening an old cow was walking slowly homeward when a lion confronted her, saying he had long been hungry and would satisfy his hunger on her. The cow asked to first feed her calf and return to be eaten. The lion laughed, suspecting a trick; she swore by her calf that she would return. He agreed. Reaching home she told the calf to drink; the calf asked why she was late, and on hearing, said he would go in her place, and refused to drink. Both went to the lion. Seeing two come in place of one, the lion was pleased. The calf said, eat me first, and the mother, pushing him back with her horns, said, eat me first. The love of cow and calf transformed the lion's heart, and seeing their affection he gave up the intention of eating them both.
