सबसे बड़ा कौन-प्रश्न खड़ा मौन- दो मित्रों में विवाद हुआ कि सबसे बड़ा कौन? पहले ने कहा पृथ्वी। दूसरे ने कहा पृथ्वी बड़ी तो शेषनाग पर क्यों पड़ी? तो पुनः कहा शेषनाग बड़ा। तो पुनः पूँछा शेषनाग बड़ा तो महादेव जी के गले में क्यों पड़ा? तो उसने कहा महादेव जी बड़े। फिर कहा महादेव जी बड़े तो हिमालय पर क्यों पड़े? तो पुनः कहा हिमालय बड़ा। उसने कहा हिमालय बड़ा तो हनुमान जी की हथेली पर क्यों पड़ा? पुनः बोला तो हनुमान जी बड़े। पुनः पूँछा हनुमान जी बड़े तो रामचन्द्र जी के चरणों में क्यों पड़े? तब वह बोला रामचन्द्र जी बड़े। तो पुनः पूँछा रामचन्द्र जी बड़े तो गुरु जी के चरणों में क्यों पड़े? अतः संसार में सबसे बड़े गुरु होते हैं।

Who is greatest — a question that leaves one silent: two friends disputed who is greatest. The first said, the earth. The other said, if the earth is great, why does it rest on Sheshnag? So he said, Sheshnag is greater. Then — if Sheshnag is great, why is he on Mahadev's neck? He said, Mahadev is greater. Then — if Mahadev is great, why does he rest on the Himalaya? He said, the Himalaya. Then — why did it rest on Hanuman's palm? He said, Hanuman is greater. Then — why did Hanuman fall at Ramchandra's feet? He said, Ramchandra is greater. Then — why did Ramchandra fall at the guru's feet? Therefore in the world the Guru is the greatest.
