धन्वन्तरि और विश्वानुलोम–धन्वन्तरि और विश्वानुलोम दोनों मित्र थे, एक जैन और एक जैनेत्तर, विश्वानुलोम ने सुन रखा था कि हाथी कुचल दे तो भी जैन मन्दिर मे नहीं जाना चाहिए, जबकि जैनेत्तर शास्त्र में जन मन्दिर पाठ था, जिसका अर्थ 'वेश्यालय अथवा मदिरालय' होता है, बाद में लोगों ने ईर्ष्या द्वेष के वश 'ज' के ऊपर दो मात्राएँ चढ़ा दीं, जिसका अर्थ जैन मन्दिर हो गया, जिससे लोग वेश्यालय और मदिरालय से तो परहेज करते नहीं हैं, जैन मन्दिर से परहेज करते हैं, इसलिए जब भी वह जैन मन्दिर के सामने से निकलता तब कानों में अङ्गुलि लगा लेता जिससे कोई शब्द कान मे न पढ़ जाए, एक बार उसे पैर में ठोकर लग गई जिससे उसके कान की अङ्गुलियाँ निकल गईं, तो 'देवों कि परछाई नहीं होती' यह शब्द कान मे पढ़ गया, उसकी पत्नी को कोई अदृश्य होकर परेशान करता था, उसने देखा तो उसकी परछाई थी, इसलिए उसने घर मे धुआँ करके उसके आँखों का अञ्जन दूर कर दिया और अपराधी को राजा के लिए सौंप दिया, वह विपत्ति से छूट गया, तब से उसका जैन मन्दिर के प्रति द्वेष दूर हो गया और वह मन्दिर जाकर दर्शन करने लगा और प्रवचन सुनने लगा, प्रवचन के बाद सबने नियम लिया तो उसने भी नियम लिया 'विना सात कदम पीछे हटे गलत काम नहीं करेंगे'। एक बार रात को बारह बजे जुआ खेलकर लौटा तो देखता है कि मेरी पत्नि किसी पुरुष के साथ सो रही है, तुरन्त तलवार निकाल कर मारने के लिए तैयार हुआ तो तुरन्त उसे याद आया कि 'सात कदम पीछे हटने के बाद ही गलत काम करना है' जैसे ही पीछे हुआ कि वहाँ से आबाज आई माँ पीछे खिसको गर्मी लग रही है, समीप आकर देखा तो वे सास बहु थीं, उस रात वे नाटक दिखाने गईं थीं और वेश-भूषा बदले विना ही सो गई थीं, उसकी पत्नी गर्भवती थी, अतः तीन प्राणियों कि रक्षा हो गई जिससे उसकी श्रद्धा और बढ़ गई।

Dhanvantari and Vishvanulom were two friends, one Jain and one non-Jain. Vishvanulom had heard that one should never enter a Jain temple even if trampled by an elephant, for the non-Jain scripture had a line 'jan mandir' meaning a brothel or tavern, upon whose 'ja' people, out of envy, added two vowel-marks making it 'Jain mandir.' So people avoided not brothels and taverns but Jain temples. Whenever he passed a Jain temple he plugged his ears. Once he stumbled and his fingers slipped out, and the words 'gods cast no shadow' entered his ears. An invisible being had been troubling his wife; realizing it had a shadow, he smoked the house to remove its magic eye-collyrium and handed the culprit to the king, freeing his wife. His hatred of the Jain temple vanished; he began to worship and hear sermons, and once took a vow: 'I will do no wrong act without first stepping back seven paces.' One midnight, returning from gambling, he saw his wife sleeping beside a man and drew his sword, but recalling his vow he stepped back; a voice said, 'Mother, move back, it is hot.' They were his wife and mother-in-law who had gone to a play and slept in costume. His pregnant wife too was safe, so three lives were saved and his faith grew stronger.
