सीता जी की प्राप्ति के बाद रामचन्द्रजी ने हनुमान जी से कहा मैने अङ्गद, विभीषण सुग्रीव आदि को प्रत्युपकार के रूप में एक-एक पद दिया है, तुम्हे कौन सा पद चाहिए? उन्होंने मना किया रामचन्द्रजी के आग्रह पर बोले मैं दो पद लूँगा, रामचन्द्रजी ने कहा तुम्हारी मर्जी, हनुमान जी बोले मर्जी नहीं अर्जी है वैसे पद से मद आता है, रामचन्द्रजी की स्वीकृति के बाद हनुमान जी ने दोनों पैर पकड़ लिये और कहा प्रभु ये दोनों पद हृदय में रहेंगे तो तीन लोक की सम्पति मिल जायेगी, बाकी के पद अपद हैं, आपद के आस्पद हैं एवं पद में राजी होने वाला भूतपूर्व बन जाता है तथा प्रभु में राजी होने वाला अभूतपूर्व बन जाता है, रामचन्द्रजी ने हनुमान जी के शीश पर आशीष का हाथ रख दिया।

After Sita was recovered, Ramachandra told Hanuman he had given a post each to Angad, Vibhishana, Sugriva etc. in return, and asked which post he wished. Hanuman declined, then on Rama's insistence said he would take two posts. Rama said 'as you wish'; Hanuman replied it was not a wish but a plea — for posts breed pride. With Rama's assent he clasped both His feet and said, Lord, if these two 'posts' (Your feet) stay in my heart, I gain the wealth of all three worlds; other posts are non-posts, seats of calamity; one pleased with position becomes 'former', but one pleased in the Lord becomes 'unprecedented.' Rama placed a blessing hand on Hanuman's head.
