एक गरीब, अन्धी एवं निःसन्तान वृद्धा ने भगवान को प्रसन्न कर लिया, भगवान ने कहा एक बार में जो वरदान चाहो माँग लो, उसने कहा! मैं अपने नाती को सोने की थाली में खीर खाते देखूँ, अर्थात् उस वृद्धा ने एक ही वरदान में आँखे, बेटा-बहुएं नाती, धन सम्पत्ति सब कुछ माँग लिया, इसी प्रकार भक्त को 'मेरे न चाह कछु और ईश रत्नत्रय निधि दीजे मुनीश' रत्नत्रय माँग लेने पर तीन लोक की कोई भी सम्पत्ति शेष नहीं रहती है, इसलिए रत्नत्रय ही माँगना चाहिए अन्य कुछ नहीं।

A poor, blind and childless old woman pleased God, and God said, 'Ask whatever single boon you wish.' She said, 'May I see my grandson eating kheer from a golden plate' — that is, in one boon she asked for eyes, a son, daughters-in-law, a grandson and wealth all at once. In the same way, when a devotee asks for the three jewels — 'I desire nothing else, O Lord; grant me, great sage, the treasure of the three jewels' — no possession of the three worlds remains beyond reach. Therefore one should ask only for the three jewels and nothing else.
