शिष्य लक्षण- जो खेल व कौतूहल से रहित हो, लज्जावान हो, अधिक और अतिमधुर आहार करने वाला न हो, दयालु हो, छलरहित हो, ब्रह्मचारी हो, विनय एवं नीति से सहित हो, ज्ञान का उपयोग करने वाला हो, प्रमाद रहित हो, समीचीन उच्चारण करने वाला हो, कृतज्ञ हो, अनेक बार गुरु की आज्ञा का पालन करने वाला हो, शान्त हो, एकाग्रचित्त हो, मधु के समान मधुरभाषी हो तथा अभिमानी न हो वह उत्तम शिष्य माना गया है।

Marks of a disciple: one free of play and idle curiosity, modest, not given to excessive or over-sweet food, compassionate, without deceit, celibate, endowed with humility and propriety, one who applies his knowledge, free of negligence, of correct speech, grateful, obedient to the guru's command again and again, calm, one-pointed, sweet-spoken as honey and not arrogant — such a one is held to be an excellent disciple.
