वर्णीजी चिरोंजाबाई के साथ गोमटेश यात्रा को गये, वहाँ वर्णीजी स्नान करने नदी पर गये, नहाते समय पैसों का पर्स अलग रख दिया, वर्णीजी ने नहाया, कमरे में आ गये, भोजन करने बैठे तब पैसों का पर्स याद आया, जैसे-तैसे भोजन किया, नदी पर गये महिलायें पानी भर कर आ रहीं थीं, पर्स वहीं पड़ा था, वर्णीजी ने उनसे पूँछा, आपने पर्स को क्यों नहीं उठाया? उन्होंने जबाव दिया, हम गोमटेश के राज्य में विना दी हुयी वस्तु को कभी नहीं छूते, यह एक आश्चर्यकारी घटना थी।

Varniji went with Chironjabai on a pilgrimage to Gommatesh; there Varniji went to the river to bathe and, while bathing, set his money-purse aside. He bathed and returned to his room; sitting to eat, he remembered the purse and somehow finished his meal. Going to the river, women were coming filling water; the purse still lay there. Varniji asked them why they had not picked up the purse. They replied, 'In the realm of Gommatesh we never touch a thing not given to us'—this was an astonishing incident.
