The Kshamavani festival, celebrated immediately after the Dashlakshana Parva, is a great festival in which we abandon enmity and ask forgiveness of one another — it is also called Kshamapana — but this festival, meant to wash away the mind's filth, has today become mere etiquette. It is not that we do not celebrate it with great enthusiasm — we do so with excess enthusiasm; on this occasion cards worth lakhs of rupees are printed all over India, placed in beautifully illustrated envelopes and sent to friends; we embrace people and ask pardon, but all this runs mechanically, with a smile on our face that is artificial — our true self has been lost somewhere. Forgiveness, which was an utterly personal thing, has today become a market affair. True Kshamavani should be to acknowledge one's own faults and, humbly, face to face or by letter, ask pardon from a pure heart and forgive others with holy feeling — that is, to hold a spirit of forgiveness. Only when, through the worship of the ten dharmas, our heart brims to the throat with the spirit of forgiveness and it overflows even into our speech, is it truly Kshamavani.
