मासोपवासी मुनि कंस बना– राजा उग्रसेन धर्मात्मा पुरूष थे, एक दिन उनके नगर में एक मासोपवासी मुनिराज का आगमन हुआ, राजा ने नगर में घोषणा करा दी कि मुनि का आहार राज महल में होगा, कोई साधु का पड़गाहन न करे, जब साधु चर्या को आये तब राजा के यहाँ पहली बार दासी का उपद्रव हो गया, साधु वापस चले गये और एक माह का पुनः उपवास ले लिया, पुनः साधु आये तो राजा ने वही घोषणा करायी, दूसरी बार नगर में हाथी का उपद्रव हो गया, पड़गाहन नहीं हो सका, साधु ने पुनः एक माह का उपवास किया, तीसरी बार साधु आये, तो उस समय नगर में आग लग गयी, इस प्रकार चार माह के उपवास हो गये। साधु बगीचे में ध्यान कर रहे थे, वहाँ से लोग निकले और चर्चा करने लगे कि ये राजा कितना दुष्ट है न स्वयं आहार देता है और न ही दूसरों को देने देता है। ये शब्द सुनकर साधु की कषाय भड़क गयी, निदान कर लिया कि अगले भव में मैं इसका बेटा बनूँ, मुनिराज संक्लेश परिणामों से मरे और उसी राजा की रानी के गर्भ में आये, तब रानी को ये भाव हुआ कि राजा के पेट को चीर कर खून पी लूँ, वे मुनि कंस बने और पिता को कारागार में डालकर यातनाएँ दीं।

King Ugrasena was a righteous man. Once a month-fasting Muni came to his city, and the king proclaimed that the Muni's alms would be given in the palace and none else should offer them. When the monk went for alms, first a maidservant caused a disturbance; he returned and took another month's fast. Next time an elephant ran amok; again no alms. The third time a fire broke out — so four months' fasting passed. As the monk meditated in a garden, passers-by remarked how wicked the king was, giving no alms himself nor letting others give. Hearing this the monk's passion flared, and he made a resolve to be born as the king's son. Dying in troubled thoughts, he entered the queen's womb; she then craved to tear open the king's belly and drink his blood. That monk became Kamsa, and he imprisoned and tortured his father.
