पिता से प्रश्न- बादशाह ने सोचा जब बीरबल इतना चतुर है तो बीरबल के पिता कितने चतुर होगें? बीरबल से कहा कि कल तुम अपने पिता को सभा में लाना। सभा में गये, बादशाह ने प्रश्न किया– दो लोगों में झगड़ा हो गया हो तो क्या करना चाहिये? वे मौन रहे, दो दिन बाद बीरबल सभा में आये, तब बादशाह ने कहा तुम्हारे पिता जी बड़े मूर्ख हैं, बीरबल ने कहा हमारे पिताजी ने भी यही कहा था, कि तुम्हारे बादशाह बड़े मूर्ख हैं, हमने उनके प्रश्न का उत्तर दिया, लेकिन वो समझे नहीं, दो लोगों में झगड़ा हो तो मौन रहना चाहिए, बादशाह बीरबल की बात को सुनकर शर्मिन्दा हो गये।

The emperor, reasoning that if Birbal was so clever his father must be cleverer still, asked Birbal to bring his father to court. When the emperor asked, 'What should one do when two people quarrel?', the old man stayed silent. Two days later the emperor told Birbal his father was a fool. Birbal replied, 'My father said the same of your Majesty—that you are a great fool; he answered your question, but you did not grasp it: when two people quarrel, one should remain silent.' The emperor was ashamed.
