शेर को गधा कहा– एक लकड़हारा जङ्गल में लकड़ियाँ लेने गया, वहाँ एक शेर को दयनीय स्थिति में देखा, तो डरते–डरते शेर के पास गया, शेर को काँटा लगा था जिससे वह चल नहीं पा रहा था, लकड़हारे ने साहस करके शेर का काँटा निकाल दिया, शेर ने कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करते हुए कहा, आप मेरे ऊपर लकड़ी रखकर ले जाया करो, शेर के ऊपर लकड़ी लाने से वह थोड़े ही समय में धनवान बन गया, पड़ोसी ने पूँछा आपकी सम्पन्नता का राज क्या है, लकड़हारे ने कहा मुझे एक गधा मिल गया है, उस पर लकड़ी रखकर लाता हूँ, जिससे मुझे बहुत लाभ हुआ है, ये शब्द शेर ने सुन लिए, दूसरे दिन जब लकड़ी लेने जङ्गल गया, तो शेर ने कहा! आपने मुझसे कल गधा कहा था, अब या तो आप मेरे गले पर कुल्हाड़ी मार दो नहीं तो मैं तुम्हे खा जाऊँगा, लकड़हारे ने अपनी जान बचाने के लिए शेर के गले पर कुल्हाड़ी मार दी जिससे शेर मर गया, शेर कुल्हाड़ी की मार सहन कर गया पर गधा शब्द सहन नहीं कर सका। अतः हमें सोच समझ कर बोलना चाहिए।

Called a lion a donkey: A woodcutter went to the forest for wood and saw a lion in a pitiable state. Fearfully he approached; the lion had a thorn and could not walk. The woodcutter bravely removed it. Grateful, the lion said, 'Load your wood on me and carry it.' By carrying wood on the lion he soon grew wealthy. A neighbour asked the secret of his prosperity; the woodcutter said, 'I have got a donkey; I load wood on it and profit greatly.' The lion overheard these words. Next day in the forest the lion said, 'Yesterday you called me a donkey; now either strike my neck with your axe or I will eat you.' To save his life the woodcutter struck the lion's neck with the axe and the lion died. The lion could bear the axe-blow but could not bear the word 'donkey.' Therefore we should speak with care.
