पैशून्य हास गर्भं, कर्कशमसमञ्जसं प्रलपितं च। अन्यदपि यदुत्सूत्रं, तत्सर्वं गर्हितं गदितं।।

चुगली, निन्दा, हास्य, कठोर, झूठ, प्रलापरूप तथा और भी शास्त्र विरुद्ध वचन निन्द्य कहलाते हैं। हास्यगर्भ– एक अप्रैल को लोग झूठ बोलकर हँसी उड़ाते हैं अथवा जिन वचनों से किसी की हँसी उड़ाई जा रही हो। कर्कश– पवनञ्जय ने अञ्जना से कहा मरजा, मुख न दिखा ये कर्कश वचन कहलाते हैं। प्रलपित– असीमित बोलना। उत्सूत्र-बच्चों को गाली देना, आगम विरुद्ध बोलना। सावद्य– नाक कान आदि के छेदन के वचन कहना। मारण– बच्चों आदि को मारना। वाणिज्य– पाप वर्धक व्यापार के वचन बोलना, जैसे साबुन, माचिस आदि के बेचने को कहना।

Backbiting, slander, mockery, harsh speech, lies, prattle, and other words contrary to scripture are all condemnable. Mockery—as on April Fools' Day people lie to make fun, or any words used to ridicule someone. Harsh—as Pavananjaya told Anjana 'die, don't show your face'; such are harsh words. Prattle—speaking without limit. Contrary-to-scripture—abusing children, speaking against the scriptures. Sinful—words urging the piercing of nose, ears etc. Killing—striking children and others. Trade—words promoting sin-increasing business, such as urging the sale of soap, matches and the like.
