मगध देश के राजगृह नगर में राजा सङ्ग्रामशूर राज्य करते थे, उनकी रानी का नाम कनकमाला था, उसी नगर में सेठ वृषभदास रहता था, जो महान सम्यग्दृष्टि था, पञ्चगुणों से सहित था, परम धार्मिक था और सम्पूर्ण लक्षणों से सहित था, जैसा कि कहा है- 'पात्रे त्यागी गुणे रागी, भोगे परिजनैः सह। शास्त्रे बोद्धा रणे योद्धा, पुरुषः पञ्च लक्षणः।।'

The evil fruit of a woman's wiles and deceit—In the city of Rajgriha in the land of Magadha reigned King Sangramshur, whose queen was named Kanakmala. In that same city lived a merchant Vrishabhdas, a person of great right faith, endowed with five virtues, supremely religious and possessed of all good marks, as it is said: 'A giver toward worthy recipients, a lover of virtue, an enjoyer of pleasures with his kin, a knower of the scriptures and a warrior in battle—such a man has the five marks.'
