दूसरों को खाई, अपने लिए कुँआ- एक दयालु सेठ गरीबों को रोज भोजन देता था, लेकिन सेठानी इस पक्ष में नहीं थी, वह कहती थी, कि मैं भोजन बनाकर परेशान होती हूँ, ये बनाया हुआ भोजन बाँट देते हैं। एक दिन सेठजी व्यापार हेतु किसी गाँव गये और सेठानी से बोल गये कि गरीबों को भोजन दे देना। सेठानी ने अवसर पाकर विषाक्त भोजन बना दिया। उस दिन सिर्फ एक ही गरीब भोजन लेने आया, वह भोजन को अपने घर ले जा रहा था रास्ते में भूख से पीड़ित सेठजी मिल गये, उसने वह भोजन सेठ को दे दिया उसका सेवन करके सेठ की मृत्यु हो गयी मायाचारी का फल तुरन्त मिल गया।

A pit for others, a well for oneself—A kind merchant fed the poor daily, but his wife disapproved, complaining, 'I toil to cook, and he gives the food away.' One day the merchant went to another village on business and told his wife to feed the poor. Seizing the chance, she prepared poisoned food. That day only one poor man came for food; as he was carrying it home he met the merchant himself, faint with hunger on the road, and gave the food to him. Eating it, the merchant died—the fruit of deceit came at once.
