पश्य लक्ष्मण! पम्पायां वकः परम धार्मिकः। शनैः शनैः पदं धत्ते, जीवानां वधशङ्क्या।। वकः किं स्तूयते राम! येनाहं निष्कुली कृता। सह वासी हि जानाति, सहवासी विचेष्टितं।।

वनविहार में रामचन्द्र जी लक्ष्मण से कहते हैं! सरोवर में बगुले को देखो कितना धार्मिक है, जीव मर न जाए इसलिए धीरे-धीरे पैर रख रहा है, मछली कहती है- हे राम! बगुले की प्रशंसा क्यों करते हो, इसने तो हमारे वंश का ही विनाश कर दिया है, आप नहीं जानते सहवासी की चेष्टा को सहवासी ही जनता है।

Wandering in the forest, Ramchandra says to Lakshmana, 'Look at the heron in the lake, how pious it is—it sets its foot down slowly, slowly, lest any creature be killed.' But the fish says, 'O Rama, why do you praise the heron? It has destroyed our whole lineage. You do not know—only one who lives alongside knows the true doings of a fellow-dweller.'
