बैरिस्टर चितरञ्जनदास मुखर्जी ट्रेन से यात्रा कर रहे थे, पूरा कम्पार्टमेंट खाली था, वे पेपर पढ़ रहे थे, वहाँ एक युवती आई और बोली मैं यहाँ बैठ जाँऊ? बैरिस्टरजी ने मौन स्वीकृति दे दी, थोड़ी देर अपनी विपत्ति बताई और गाड़ी ने जैसे ही स्पीड पकड़ी तो बोली हमें हजार रुपये दे दो नहीं तो मैं चिल्ला दूंगी कि एकान्त में ये मेरे साथ बदतमीजी कर रहे थे। बैरिस्टरजी ने इशारा किया न मैं बोल सकता हूँ और न ही सुन सकता हूँ। एक कागज में लिखकर दो उसने वही बात लिख दी। बैरिस्टरजी ने अच्छे ढंग से पढ़ा और जेब में रख लिया और गाल पर एक चाँटा मारा और कहा अब चिल्लाओ कितना चिल्लाती हो। वह चुप रह गयी और अपनी ही चाल में फँस गयी, उन्होंने उसे गिरफ्तार करवा दिया।

Barrister Chittaranjan Das Mukherjee was travelling by train; the whole compartment was empty and he was reading a paper. A young woman came and asked if she might sit there. The barrister silently consented. After a while she related her troubles, and as soon as the train picked up speed she said, 'Give me a thousand rupees or I will scream that you were molesting me in this lonely place.' The barrister signalled that he could neither speak nor hear, and asked her to write it on paper. She wrote the same threat. The barrister read it carefully, put it in his pocket, gave her a slap on the cheek and said, 'Now scream as much as you like.' She fell silent, caught in her own trick, and he had her arrested.
