मैं रिश्वत वालों का अन्न नहीं लेता- एक थानेदार के पड़ोस में एक भिखारी भीख माँग रहा था, पड़ोसी ने दुत्कार दिया, वह आगे बढ़ गया, थानेदार को दया आई, भिखारी को आवाज देते हुये कहा! ठहरो मैं खाना भेजता हूँ, भिखारी अनसुनी करके आगे बढ़ गया, थानेदार ने समझा इसने सुना नहीं, उसने नौकर से कहा उसे रोटी दे आओ, नौकर ले गया, तो भिखारी ने मनाकर दिया, कहा! मैं रिश्वत लेने वाले का अन्न-जल ग्रहण नहीं करता, नौकर ने भिखारी को चार गालियाँ सुनाई और वापस आ गया, उसने थानेदार को बताया, थानेदार सुनकर सन्न रह गया, बहुत गुस्सा आई दर-दर का भिखारी होकर मेरी उपेक्षा करता है, लेकिन मन आत्म ग्लानि से भर गया, सब कुछ होने के बाद भी थानेदार को उथल-पुथल मच गई, उसने रिश्वत लेना छोड़ दिया, एक वर्ष बाद वही भिखारी दरवाजे पर खड़ा भीख माँग रहा था, 'दाता रोटी दे दो' थानेदार ने कहा मेरे जैसे रिश्वत खोर का तुम अन्न कैसे खाओगे? भिखारी ने हँसकर कहा! आप रिश्वत नहीं लेते, आपकी चरण रज माथे, थानेदार ने उसके चरण पकड़ लिए, और कहा! तुम मेरे सच्चे शिक्षक हो।

'I do not take the food of bribe-takers' — a beggar was begging near a police officer's house; the neighbour drove him off, and he moved on. Feeling pity, the officer called out that he would send food, but the beggar ignored him and went on. Thinking he had not heard, the officer sent a servant with bread, but the beggar refused, saying, 'I do not accept food or water from a bribe-taker.' The servant abused him and returned; hearing this the officer was stunned and furious that a wandering beggar should scorn him, yet his mind filled with self-reproach and he was thrown into turmoil, and he gave up taking bribes. A year later the same beggar stood at his door begging, 'Giver, give bread.' The officer said, 'How will you eat the food of a bribe-taker like me?' The beggar laughed and said, 'You take no bribes now; the dust of your feet on my forehead.' The officer clasped his feet and said, 'You are my true teacher.'
