आप की संस्कृति वस्त्रों पर हमारी संस्कृति चरित्र पर- विवेकानन्दजी अमेरिका गये, लोगों ने देखा, ये एक चोला पहन कर आये हैं, क्या यही विवेकानन्द हैं? हम लोग समझते थे कि ये टिप-टॉप होंगे, फिर एक व्यक्ति ने पूँछ लिया कि आपके देश की यही संस्कृति है? विवेकानन्दजी ने कहा आप की संस्कृति वस्त्रों पर टिकी है, हमारी संस्कृति चरित्र पर टिकी है, वस्त्र तो दर्जी बना सकता है पर चरित्र का निर्माण सिर्फ गुरू ही कर सकते हैं।

'Your culture rests on clothes, ours on character' — when Vivekananda went to America, people saw him in a plain robe and wondered if this was really Vivekananda, having expected him to be smartly dressed. When someone asked whether this was his country's culture, he replied: your culture rests on garments, ours on character; a tailor can make clothes, but only a guru can build character.
