औचित्यमेकमेकत्र, गुणानां राशिरेकतः। विषायते गुणग्राम, औचित्यं परिवर्जितः।।

करोड़ गुणों की तुलना में भारी औचित्य गुण है, दान तथा प्रिय वचनों के द्वारा दूसरे को सन्तुष्ट करने का नाम औचित्य गुण है, इस गुण की बड़ी महिमा है, एक ओर एक औचित्य गुण और दूसरी ओर गुणों की राशि, औचित्य गुण के विना गुणों की राशि विष तुल्य प्रतीत होती है, यदि मनुष्य में प्रिय वचनों के द्वारा दूसरे को सन्तोष दिलाने की क्षमता न हो तो उसके सभी गुण व्यर्थ हैं।

The quality of propriety outweighs a crore of virtues; propriety means satisfying another through charity and pleasant words. Great is the glory of this quality — on one side the single virtue of propriety, on the other a heap of virtues; without propriety the heap of virtues appears like poison. If a person lacks the ability to give others contentment through pleasant words, all his virtues are in vain.
