सम्मइ सूत्र के कर्ता आचार्य सिद्धसेन बहुत बड़े वादी थे, नगर-नगर में जाकर वाद करते थे और जीत लेते थे, एक बार एक नगर में गये, पता लगा यहाँ कोई अत्यन्त निपुण वादी है, अभी जङ्गल गया है, सिद्धसेन जी जङ्गल चले गये जैसे-तैसे उसको ढूँढ़ लिया, सिद्धसेनजी ने कहा हमसे वाद करो, उसने कहा भाई राजा के सामने वाद करना ठीक है नहीं तो निर्णय कौन करेगा, सिद्धसेनजी नहीं माने बोले ग्वालों को बुलाओ गाय श्रोता होगीं ग्वाले जज होंगे, ऐसा ही किया, सिद्धसेनजी दो घण्टे तक संस्कृत में बोलते रहे, ग्वाले संस्कृत क्या जानें? प्रतिवादी आया उसने बढ़िया नाचना गाना प्रारम्भ किया, सब ग्वाले प्रसन्न हो गये, तब सिद्धसेनजी ने कहा भैया तुम जीते हम हारे, 'वक्ता को द्रव्य, क्षेत्र, काल का जानने वाला होना चाहिए'।

Acharya Siddhasen, author of the Sammai Sutra, was a great debater who travelled from town to town, debating and winning. Once he came to a town and learned that a very skilled debater lived there, currently gone to the forest. Siddhasen went into the forest and somehow found him, saying, 'Debate with me.' The man said, 'Brother, a debate should be held before a king, else who will judge?' Siddhasen insisted, saying, 'Call the cowherds — the cows shall be the audience and the cowherds the judges.' So it was done. Siddhasen spoke in Sanskrit for two hours — but what do cowherds know of Sanskrit? The opponent came and began fine singing and dancing, and all the cowherds were delighted. Then Siddhasen said, 'Brother, you have won and I have lost — a speaker must be one who knows the substance, place, and time.'
