सन्तों ने कहा है कि अच्छे मित्र का यही लक्षण है कि वह पाप से रोकता है, हितकारी कार्यों में लगाता है, उसकी गुप्त बात अन्य से छिपाता है, उसके गुणों को प्रकट करता है, विपत्ति काल में उसका साथ नहीं छोड़ता और समय आने पर धन देता है। उसी प्रकार मित्र को प्रिय व्यवहार करना चाहिए, जिस प्रकार हाथ शरीर का हित करते हैं, पलकें आँखों को प्रिय लगे वैसा करती हैं।

The saints have said the mark of a good friend is that he restrains one from sin, engages one in beneficial deeds, conceals one's secrets from others, reveals one's virtues, does not desert in calamity, and gives wealth when the time comes. Likewise one should treat a friend lovingly, just as the hands do good to the body and the eyelids act for the eyes' comfort.
