वनमाला और लक्ष्मण का संवाद आगम सम्मत– लक्ष्मण ने कहा! ''मुझे छोड़ दो'' कार्य हो जाने पर मैं तुम्हें लेने आऊँगा, मुझे देव आदि की शपथ है, लेकिन वनमाला को उनके आने में संदेह हुआ, तब लक्ष्मण ने कहा कि, सुनो यदि मैं न आऊँ तो मुझे रात्रि भोजन का पाप लगे। (धर्म संग्रह श्राव. अधिकार-३] श्लोक २८/२९) रामचन्द्र जी को अच्छी तरह व्यवस्थित करके यदि मैं तुम्हारे पास न आऊँ तो मुझे (लक्ष्मण को) गौ हत्या, स्त्री हत्या आदि का पाप लगे। इस प्रकार अन्य शपथों के करने पर भी वनमाला ने लक्ष्मण से एक ही शपथ करायी कि आपको रात्रिभोजन का पाप लगे।

The dialogue of Vanamala and Lakshmana, as attested in scripture: Lakshmana said, 'Let me go; when the task is done I will come to take you—I swear by the gods and all.' But Vanamala doubted whether he would return; then Lakshmana said, 'Listen, if I do not come, may the sin of eating at night fall upon me.' (Dharma Sangraha, Shravaka section-3, verse 28/29) 'If, after settling Ramachandra properly, I do not come to you, may the sin of killing a cow, of killing a woman, and the like fall upon me (Lakshmana).' Thus, though he offered other oaths, Vanamala had Lakshmana swear only this one oath—that the sin of eating at night should fall upon him.
