भरत-बाहुबली ने बन्दर और नेबला की पर्याय में दान की अनुमोदना की थी, उसके बाद उन्होंने कभी दान नहीं दिया, अत: इनको जाति स्मरण नहीं हुआ, राजा श्रेयाँस ने श्रीमति (वज्रजङ्घ की पत्नी) की पर्याय में आहार दान दिया था, इसलिये उनको जाति स्मरण हो गया था।

Bharata and Bahubali, in their births as a monkey and a mongoose, had approved of a gift, and after that they never gave a gift; hence they did not attain recollection of past births. King Shreyans, in his birth as Shrimati (the wife of Vajrajangha), had given the gift of food; therefore he attained recollection of past births.
