One regards the varieties of delusion as oneself and as one's own, and so possession arises; first turn it around. For instance, keeping special devotion toward Parshvanath and the like, one should avoid unholy resorts; then, having true faith in the nature of things, one should avoid wrong belief. The worldly being says, "You have not seen my anger" - that is, out of ignorance he takes anger as his own; instead one should be angry at anger and "conquer anger with forgiveness." So too, from the rise of pride he says, "What do you take me for?" - whereas any power, wealth or knowledge is from the rise of merit; keeping the self-respect of being a Jain, one should think of self-welfare and "conquer pride with humility." Likewise, cheating others he thinks himself clever and says, "No one could catch me"; understanding deceit to be a cause of animal birth, one should "conquer deceit with straightforwardness." From the rise of greed one wishes to make another's things one's own, though greed is called the father of sin; so first let there be greed for heaven and liberation, and "conquer greed with contentment." The ignorant mock others' weaknesses; one should "laugh at one's own faults." Likewise one should first have love for the Five Supreme Beings and disgust for sense-objects, aversion to places of sin, sorrow for the sins one has done, fear of going to hell and other evil births, and self-reproach for one's own faults; desiring the "woman" of liberation, one should have aversion to all women, become "impotent" toward wrongdoing, and - regarding oneself as "man," that is, the soul - make effort for liberation and renounce the passions entirely.
