एक व्यक्ति मुनि महाराज के पास गया और बोला हमारे कुंए का पानी गन्दा हो गया आप कोई मन्त्र दे दीजिये, पन्द्रह दिन जाप करने के बाद देखा तो कुंए का पानी और ज्यादा गन्दा था, महाराज को उलाहना देने के लिए आया, तो महाराज ने पूँछा, आपके कुंए का पानी गन्दा कैसे हुआ है? तब उसने कहा एक दिन चार कुत्ते लड़ते हुए आये और कुंए में गिर कर मर गये, महाराज ने कहा कुत्तों को बाहर निकाला कि नहीं? उसने कहा नहीं, तो फिर आपके कुंए का पानी स्वच्छ कैसे होगा? उसी प्रकार अनादिकाल से आत्मा रूपी कुँए में पड़े हुए चार कषाय रूपी कुत्ते यदि नहीं निकाले तो आत्मा रूपी कुंआ साफ नहीं हो सकता है।

A man went to a muni and said, "Our well's water has become foul; please give me a mantra." After chanting for fifteen days he found the water even fouler and came to reproach the muni. The muni asked, "How did your well become foul?" He said, "One day four dogs came fighting and fell into the well and died." The muni asked, "Did you take the dogs out or not?" He said, "No." "Then how will your well's water become clean?" In the same way, if the four dogs of the passions, fallen since beginningless time into the well of the soul, are not removed, the well of the soul cannot become clean.
