रामचन्द्रजी सीता और लक्ष्मण के साथ वन-वन भटकते हुए एक ऐसे महा एकान्त वन में आये, जहाँ राम-लक्ष्मण और सीता ने स्नान पूर्वक शुद्धि से भोजन तैयार किया और पड़गाहन के लिए बाहर खड़े हुए, तो सीता ने आकाश मार्ग से चारण ऋद्धिधारी दो मुनि आते हुए देखे, राम-सीता ने उनका पड़गाहन कर नवधाभक्ति पूर्वक निरन्तराय आहारदान दिया, वहाँ एक वृक्ष पर गिद्ध पक्षी (जटायु) बैठा था, आहार चर्या देख उसको जातिस्मरण हो गया, महामुनि के दर्शनार्थ वृक्ष से नीचे आया, मुनियों के गन्धोदक के प्रभाव से उसका शरीर महाकान्ति से युक्त हो गया और भक्ति करता हुआ मुनि के आगे नाचने लगा तथा पाप से डरकर श्रावक के व्रत ग्रहण किये और व्रती बना।

Rama, wandering forest to forest with Sita and Lakshman, came to a deeply secluded forest where they bathed, purely prepared food and stood outside to welcome a mendicant. Sita saw two charana munis of miraculous power arriving through the sky; Rama and Sita welcomed them and gave food with the ninefold devotion, without hindrance. A vulture (Jatayu) perched on a tree there gained recollection of past births on witnessing the alms-giving; it came down for the munis' darshan, and by the power of the munis' scented water its body became radiant. Dancing with devotion before the munis and fearing sin, it took the vows of a shravak and became a votary.
