तीनों अवस्था व्यर्थ खो दीं- एकगरीब व्यक्ति पर प्रसन्न होकर राजा ने उसे तीन घण्टे के लिए रत्नों के कोठे में प्रवेश दे दिया, इतने समय में तुम जितने रत्न ले जाना चाहो ले जाओ, इसके बाद उस कोठे से एक भी रत्न नहीं ले सकते, उस मूढ़ ने रत्नमयी गोरख धन्धे का खिलौना देखा, हाँथ लगाते ही वह बिखर गया, द्वारपाल ने कहा इसको ठीक करो, तभी आगे जा सकते हो, उसने उसे ठीक करने में ही सारा समय निकाल दिया, एक भी रत्न नहीं ले पाया, द्वारपाल ने पकड़कर बाहर कर दिया। कृपालु राजा ने दुबारा उसे तीनघण्टे के लिए सोने, चाँदी, के कोठे में भेजा वहाँ पर स्त्रियाँ स्वागत के लिए खड़ीं थी, उनके स्वागत में वह भूल गया और सोने-चाँदी का कुछ भी सामान नहीं ले पाया, अन्त में राजा ने पीतल-ताम्बे के कोठे में भेजा, वहाँ पर भोजन-पानी रखा था, वह खा पीकर सो गया और सारा समय खत्म कर दिया और खाली हाथ घर गया, इसी तरह मानव बाल अवस्था खेल-खिलौनों में, जवानी भोगों में, बुढापा खा-पी कर सोने में गुजार देता है और मानव पर्याय में कुछ भी आत्महित नहीं करता है।

Wasting all three stages: pleased with a poor man, a king let him enter a jewel-chamber for three hours—take as many jewels as you can, none after. The fool saw a jewelled puzzle-toy; the moment he touched it, it fell apart. The doorkeeper said, 'Fix it before you may go on.' He spent all his time fixing it, took not one jewel, and was thrown out. The kind king sent him again for three hours to the gold-and-silver chamber, where women stood to welcome him; lost in their welcome he took nothing. Finally the king sent him to the brass-and-copper chamber, where food and water were kept; he ate, drank, slept away the whole time and went home empty-handed. So too a man spends childhood in toys, youth in pleasures, old age in eating and sleeping, and does nothing for his soul in the human birth.
