मनुष्य की उम्र चालीस वर्ष (बाल कहानी)- ब्रह्माजी ने मनुष्य, कुत्ता, गधा और उल्लू इनको चालीस-चालीस वर्ष की उम्र दी, मनुष्य ने अपना काम पूछा, कि हमें क्या करना है? ब्रह्माजी ने बताया तो मनुष्य ने कहा, बहुत कम उम्र है, गधे ने कहा हम कब तक भार ढ़ोते रहेंगे। कुत्ते ने कहा हम कब तक द्वारे-द्वारे जाकर अपमानित होकर टुकड़े खाते रहेंगे, उल्लू ने कहा हम कब तक अन्धे बनकर जियेंगे, तब इन जीवों की आधी-आधी उम्र लेकर मनुष्य को दे दी, इसलिए मनुष्य चालीस वर्ष के बाद गधे की तरह भार ढ़ोता रहता है, साठ वर्ष के बाद कुत्ते की तरह द्वार पर बैठा रहता है और अस्सी के बाद उल्लू की तरह अन्धा बनकर बैठा रहता है।

Man's lifespan of forty years (a children's tale): Brahma gave man, dog, donkey and owl each forty years. When man learned his tasks he complained the span was too short. The donkey asked how long it must carry loads, the dog how long it must go door to door, insulted, eating scraps, and the owl how long it must live blind. So half of each animal's span was taken and given to man. That is why after forty a man goes on carrying burdens like a donkey, after sixty sits at the door like a dog, and after eighty sits blind like an owl.
