धूर्त ने कञ्जूस को ठगा– धूर्त ने कञ्जूस सेठ से कहा कि हमारे यहाँ मेहमान आये हैं, बर्तन दे दो, सेठ ने बर्तन दे दिये, धूर्त बर्तन वापस करने आया तो दस के स्थान पर बीस बर्तन ले आया, सेठ ने पूँछा ये कहाँ से आये, उसने कहा ये सब बर्तन गर्भवान थे हमारे यहाँ जाकर इन ने बच्चे दे दिये, सेठ प्रसन्न हुआ और सभी बर्तन रख लिये कुछ समय बाद सोने–चाँदी के बर्तन लेने आया सेठ ने दे दिये, अब कुछ दिन बाद सिर मुड़ाकर आया और बोला सारे बर्तन मर गये, हमने उनका संस्कार किया एक हजार रूपये खर्च हुये। सेठ ने कहा बर्तन मरते हैं क्या? उसने कहा जब बर्तन बच्चे देते हैं तो मरते भी हैं। धूर्त ने सभी सोने–चाँदी के वर्तन भी रख लिए और पञ्चायत बैठाकर एक हजार रूपये भी ले गया।

A trickster cheated a miser: A trickster told a miserly merchant that guests had come and asked to borrow vessels. The merchant lent them. When returning them the trickster brought twenty vessels instead of ten; asked where they came from, he said the vessels had been pregnant and had given birth at his house. Delighted, the merchant kept them all. Later the trickster came to borrow gold and silver vessels, which were given. A few days later he came with a shaved head and said all the vessels had died and he had spent a thousand rupees on their last rites. The merchant said, 'Do vessels die?' The trickster replied, 'When vessels give birth, they die too.' The trickster kept all the gold and silver vessels and, convening a village council, even took a thousand rupees.
