लोभ पाप का बाप बखाना– एक विप्र बनारस से पढ़कर आया, पत्नि ने प्रश्न किया कि 'पाप का बाप कौन है'? उसने कहा सब कुछ पढ़ा, लेकिन ये पढ़ा ही नहीं, पत्नि ने कहा फिर से जाओ और पढ़कर आओ, रास्ते में वेश्या से पूँछा, उसने कहा मैं इसका उत्तर जानती हूँ मेरे घर चलो, उसने कहा पहले में आपका आतिथ्य करना चाहती हूँ आप भोजन कर लें, विप्र बोला मैं आपके यहाँ भोजन नहीं कर सकता, वेश्या ने कहा मैं आपको सौ रुपए दूँगी आप भोजन सामग्री ले लें, विप्र तैयार हो गया, तब उसने कहा मैं भोजन बना देती हूँ दो सौ रुपए ले लेना, विप्र तैयार हो गया, अन्त में उसने कहा एक ग्रास मेरे हाथ से खा लो पाँच सौ रूपए ले लेना मेरे जीवन के सारे पाप धुल जायेंगे, विप्र ने सोचा इसने बनाया तो है ही अब इसके हाथ से एक ग्रास खाने में क्या जाता है, यहाँ कोई देख भी नहीं रहा है, पैसों के लोभ से विप्र उसके हाँथ से भोजन करने के लिए तैयार हुआ तो वेश्या ने एक चाँटा मारा और कहा यही लोभ, पाप का बाप है।

Greed is the father of sin, demonstrated: A Brahmin returned from study in Banaras; his wife asked, 'Who is the father of sin?' He said he had studied everything but not this. She sent him back to learn. On the way he asked a courtesan, who said she knew the answer and invited him home. She said she first wished to host him with a meal; he refused to eat at her house. She offered a hundred rupees to buy the food; he agreed. Then she said she would cook it and he could take two hundred rupees; he agreed. Finally she said, take one morsel from my hand and receive five hundred rupees, and all the sins of my life will be washed away. He reasoned that since she had cooked it, one morsel from her hand was nothing, and no one was watching—so out of greed for money he prepared to eat from her hand. Then the courtesan slapped him and said: this very greed is the father of sin.
