पिता पुत्र यात्रा पर निकले प्यासे बेटे से एक कदम भी चला नहीं जा रहा था, पिता ने धैर्य बँधाया बेटा सामने हवेली दिख रही है, वहाँ पानी अवश्य मिलेगा, किसी तरह वहाँ पहुँचे, पर प्याऊ पर कोई पानी पिलाने वाला नहीं था, बच्चा पानी-पानी चिल्ला रहा था, सेठ जी मस्ती से गद्दी पर बैठे हुए थे, पिता ने साहस करके सेठ जी से कहा सेठ जी पानी पिला दीजिये, सेठ जी ने कहा थोडा इन्तजार करो, पिता ने दुबारा निवेदन किया तो सेठ जी ने कहा अभी आदमी नहीं है, तब पिता ने कहा थोड़ी देर के लिए आप ही आदमी बन जाइए, संसार में सब कुछ है पर आदमियत (इंसानियत) की कमी है, अतः आदमी को पहले आदमियत प्राप्त करना चाहिए बाद में दूसरी चीजें।

A father and son set out on a journey; the thirsty son could not walk a step further. The father comforted him, 'Son, there is a mansion ahead where we will surely get water.' Somehow they reached it, but there was no one at the water-stand to serve water, and the child kept crying for water. The merchant sat comfortably on his cushioned seat. Summoning courage the father asked him to give water; the merchant said, 'Wait a while.' When the father requested again, the merchant said, 'There is no man (servant) here just now.' Then the father said, 'For a little while, become a man (a human being) yourself. In this world there is everything, but there is a lack of humanity—so a person should first attain humanity, and other things afterward.'
