जैसे को तैसा- एक राजा लङ्गड़ा था, और अहङ्कारी भी था, एक बार राज दरबार में सूरदास जी भजन सुनाने आये, राजा ने पूँछा तुम्हारा नाम क्या है? उसने उत्तर दिया- दौलत! राजा ने व्यङ्ग किया- क्या दौलत भी अन्धी होती है? सूरदास जी ने कहा यदि अन्धी नहीं होती तो लङ्गड़े के पास क्यों आती, राजा का अहङ्कार चूर-चूर हो गया, अतः किसी को अपने से छोटा नहीं समझना चाहिए।

Tit for tat—A king was lame and also arrogant. Once the blind poet Surdas came to the court to sing devotional songs. The king asked, 'What is your name?' He replied, 'Daulat (Wealth).' The king mocked, 'Is Wealth blind too?' Surdas said, 'If Wealth were not blind, why would it come to a lame man?' The king's ego was utterly shattered—so one should never consider anyone lower than oneself.
