जुआँरी, पुजारी, कमाऊ, अंधा चार पूत- एक सेठ के चार लड़के थे, उनमें बड़ा लड़का कमाऊ पूत था, दूसरा ज्वारी, तीसरा पुजारी और चौथा अंधा था, बड़े लड़के की पत्नि ने पति को भड़काया आप कमाते हो सब खाते हैं, हम लोग सभी अलग हो जाते हैं। यह बात पिताजी से कही, पिताजी ने कहा बेटा अलग होने के पहले हम लोग तीर्थ यात्रा कर लेते हैं, सब मिलकर तीर्थ को जाते हैं, पहुँचकर पिताजी ने क्रम-क्रम से बच्चों को दस-दस रुपये देकर रसोई की सामग्री लेने भेजा, बड़ा लड़का व्यापार करके दस के पन्द्रह कर लेता है, और सामग्री ले आता है, जुआरी जुआ खेल कर भाग्य से दस के बीस कर लेता है, और सामग्री ले आता है, तीसरा बेटा दस रूपए का दीपक लेता है और भगवान् की आरती करके कहता है आपको ही हमारी व्यवस्था बनाना है, तो वहाँ का रक्षक देव सोचता है धर्म के प्रति इतनी आस्था है यदि इसकी व्यवस्था नहीं बनायेंगे तो लोगो की धर्म के प्रति आस्था नहीं रहेगी, और वह देव गाड़ी भर सामान भेज देता है, सब बच्चे अपने-अपने पुरूषार्थ से रसोई का सामान लाते हैं, सबके भाग्य की परीक्षा आज होती है, तो बड़े लड़के का अहङ्कार चूर हो जाता है, कि सबसे बड़ा अभागा तो मैं ही हूँ।

The gambler, the worshipper, the earner and the blind—one merchant's four sons—A merchant had four sons: the eldest an earner, the second a gambler, the third a worshipper, and the fourth blind. The eldest's wife incited him: 'You earn and everyone eats; let us all separate.' When this was told to the father, he said, 'Son, before we separate let us make a pilgrimage.' They all went together, and on arriving the father gave each son ten rupees in turn to fetch provisions for cooking. The eldest traded and turned ten into fifteen and brought supplies; the gambler played and by luck turned ten into twenty and brought supplies; the third son bought a lamp for ten rupees, performed aarti to God and said, 'It is for You to make our arrangements.' The guardian deity there thought, 'Such faith in dharma! If I do not provide for him, people will lose faith in dharma,' and sent a cart-load of goods. Each child brought provisions by his own effort; when everyone's fortune was thus tested that day, the eldest son's ego was shattered—for he realized that he himself was the most unfortunate of all.
