जङ्गल में तप कर रहे साधु से पथिक ने रास्ता पूँछा, साधु ने उत्तर दिया इस रास्ते में मत जाओ, वहाँ मौत है। मानी पथिक नहीं माने, चले गये। आगे चलकर जङ्गल में उनकों स्वर्ण मुद्राओं का ढेर मिला, वे प्रसन्न हो गयें। चारों ने मुद्राएँ बाँट लीं एवं एक को मिठाई लेने भेजा। उसके मन में आया कि, 'मिठाई में जहर मिला देते हैं, वे तीनों खाकर मर जायेंगे और मुझे सारी मुद्राएँ मिल जायेंगी'। वहाँ उन तीनों ने सोचा कि 'जैसे ही वह मिठाई लेकर आयेगा और हम लोग उसको मार डालेंगे, जिससे कि चार नहीं तीन हिस्से करने पड़ेंगे'। जैसे ही वह मिठाई लेकर आया और तीनों ने उसे मार डाला और मिठाई खाकर स्वयं भी मर गये, इस प्रकार अहङ्कारी लोग गुरुजनों की बात को ठुकरा कर दुर्दशा को प्राप्त होते हैं।

A traveller asked the way from a monk practising austerity in the forest; the monk replied, 'Do not take this road, there is death that way.' The proud travellers ignored him and went on. Further on they found a heap of gold coins and were delighted. The four divided the coins and sent one to fetch sweets. On the way he thought, 'I will poison the sweets; the three will eat and die, and all the coins will be mine.' Meanwhile the three thought, 'As soon as he returns with the sweets we will kill him, so the shares are three, not four.' The moment he came back the three killed him and, eating the sweets, died themselves. Thus arrogant people who spurn the words of their elders meet ruin.
