बल का मान कियो रावण ने, सोने की लंका नशानी। तन का मान किया दुर्योधन ने, मिट्टी में मिल गई जवानी।। तप का मान कमठ ने कीना, नरक की राह दिखानी। ज्ञान का मान किया गौतम ने, झुकने पड़ो ऋषिज्ञानी।। दान का मान कियो बलि राजा, पीठ पड़ी नपवानी। काहु को मान रहो न पुजारी, काहे करे लघु प्राणी।।

Ravana took pride in his strength — golden Lanka was destroyed. Duryodhana took pride in his body — his youth was ground into dust. Kamath took pride in his austerity — it showed him the road to hell. Gautam took pride in his learning — the wise sage had to bow. King Bali took pride in his charity — his back was made to be measured. Pride abided with none, O worshipper; then why should a lowly creature indulge in it?
