A very poor family lived, and once a fortune-telling saint came to the forest. The mother told her son to go ask whether their days of sorrow would end or they would keep dying of hunger. At the mother's urging he set out; evening fell, and at a village he asked at a wealthy woman's mansion if he could pass the night; she agreed and asked where he was going. He said, to ask the saint my mother's question. She said, ask one of mine too: my daughter is mute, will she ever speak, will she marry? Going on, he stopped at a hermit's hut to quench his thirst; the hermit gave water and asked his errand, then said, ask one for me too: I have done austerities twenty-five years, why do I not get vision of God? Further on, hungry, he begged food from a ploughing farmer, who fed him and said, ask my question too: my field grows crop but bears no fruit, why? Reaching the saint he bowed and asked for solutions to four questions. The saint said, we solve only three a day. He thought, whose shall I drop? Dropping his mother's, he first asked the wealthy woman's; the saint said, the one on seeing whom the girl begins to speak will be her husband. For the hermit: as long as a jewel remains in the hermit's beard he will not get vision of God. As long as pots of gold and diamonds lie buried in the farmer's field, no fruit will come. Returning, he told the farmer, who dug up the pots and gave them to him; the hermit too gave him the jewel; the wealthy woman's daughter began to speak on seeing that very boy, so she was married to him. He went to his mother, who was astonished, and he said: mother, the good of one who does good to others is accomplished of itself.
