महात्मा ने घायल पड़े सिपाही से कहा शास्त्र सुनोगे? सिपाही बोला नहीं, पानी पीऊँगा, महात्मा पानी ले आया, कहा सिर ऊँचा करोगे? कर दिया, सेवा से द्रवीभूत होकर मरणोन्मुख सिपाही की आँखों में आँसू आ गये और उसने कहा महाराज मैंने धर्म ग्रन्थ नहीं पढ़े लेकिन आपके सेवा भाव से धर्म ग्रन्थों का रहस्य समझ में आ गया है कि परोपकार के समान कोई धर्म नहीं है और पर को पीड़ा देने से बड़ा कोई अधर्म नहीं है।

A sage asked a wounded soldier lying there, will you hear scripture? The soldier said no, I will drink water. The sage brought water and asked, will you raise your head? He did. Melted by this service, tears came to the dying soldier's eyes, and he said: Maharaj, I have not read the scriptures, but through your spirit of service I have understood their secret, that there is no dharma equal to doing good to others and no adharma greater than causing others pain.
