गरीब गली में एवं धनी मन्दिर में दीप जला रहा था, गरीब को अधिक सुख मिला, धनी को कम सुख मिला, क्योंकि अन्धेरी गली में प्रकाश की जरूरत थी, मन्दिर तो स्वभाव से जगमगा रहा था, मन्दिर में दीपक रखना स्वार्थ है, गली में दीपक रखना परोपकार है, इसलिए दोनों के सुख एवं पुण्य में अन्तर है।

A poor man lit a lamp in a lane and a rich man in a temple; the poor man gained more joy and the rich man less, because the dark lane needed light while the temple was already glowing by nature. Placing a lamp in the temple is self-interest, placing one in the lane is benefiting others; hence there is a difference in the joy and the merit of the two.
