तीव्र तप करता हुआ भी तथा शास्त्र रूपी समुद्र का अवगाहन करता हुआ भी यदि वृद्ध सेवा नहीं करता अर्थात् सत्पुरुषों की आज्ञा में नहीं रहता है तो उसका कदापि कल्याण नहीं हो सकता है।

Even one who performs intense austerity and plunges into the ocean of scripture can never attain welfare if he does not serve his elders—that is, if he does not abide by the command of the virtuous.
