संस्मरण- खुरई में विद्वान् से पढ़ने की भावना व्यक्त की, उन्होंने पूँछा जैन क्यों बनना चाहते हो? वर्णीजी ने कहा विशेषता यह है कि जैन लोग पानी छान कर पीते हैं, रात्रि में भोजन नहीं करते, शुद्ध भोजन करते हैं, देवदर्शन करते हैं आदि, तब पण्डित जी बोले- यहाँ अच्छा-अच्छा खाने को मिलता है, इसलिये जैन बनना चाहते हो, वचन रूपी बाण हृदय में लगे, लेकिन सङ्कल्प लिया कि पढ़कर ही मिलूंगा।

A reminiscence: at Khurai he expressed to a scholar his wish to study; the scholar asked, 'Why do you want to become a Jain?' Varni ji said, 'The special thing is that Jains drink water after straining it, do not eat at night, take pure food, do darshan of the deity,' and so on. At this the Pandit said, 'You want to become a Jain because you get good food to eat here.' The words pierced his heart like an arrow, but he resolved that he would meet him again only after he had studied.
