शरीर और कषाय का कृश करना सल्लेखना है, जिनेन्द्र वर्णीजी का एक फेफड़ा था, डॉक्टर ने दूसरी बार पानी लेने को कहा, तब सारे समाचार पत्रों में निकलवाया एवं व्रत खेद पूर्वक छोड़े, बाम्बे हास्पिटल में डॉक्टर ने कहा आपको सूप लेना पड़ेगा, वर्णी जी से पिताजी ने कहा डॉक्टर ऐसा कह रहा है, वर्णीजी डॉक्टर के पास स्वयं गये और कहा कि क्या आप दावा कर सकते हैं कि मैं सूप लेकर जिन्दा रह सकता हूँ? किन्तु मैं दावा करता हूँ कि मैं शाकाहार से जिन्दा रह सकता हूँ। एवं वर्णी जी ने जैनेन्द्र सिद्धान्त कोष की रचना कर जैन संस्कृति को अद्भुत धरोहर समर्पित की है। आचार्य श्री विद्यासागर जी से बाद में पुनः व्रत ग्रहण कर सल्लेखना शुरू की, क्षमासागर जी समयसार सुनाते थे, पन्द्रह गाथा सुनाने के बाद पूँछा और सुनाऊँ? तो हाथ जोड़ कर बोले इतना उतर जाये तो पर्याप्त है, आचार्य श्री ने कहा वो महान साधक थे वर्णीजी की सन् 1983 ईसरी में सल्लेखना पूर्ण हुयी थी।

Sallekhana is the thinning of body and passions. Jinendra Varni ji had only one lung; when the doctor asked a second time to draw off fluid, he had it announced in all the newspapers and reluctantly gave up his vows. At Bombay Hospital the doctor said he would have to take soup; his father conveyed this, so Varni ji himself went to the doctor and asked, 'Can you guarantee that I will live if I take soup? For I guarantee that I can live on a vegetarian diet.' Varni ji composed the Jainendra Siddhanta Kosha, offering a wonderful heritage to Jain culture. Later, taking vows again from Acharya Vidyasagar ji, he began Sallekhana; Kshamasagar ji would recite the Samayasara to him, and after fifteen verses asked, 'Shall I recite more?' Varni ji folded his hands and said, 'If I can absorb this much, it is enough.' Acharya-shri said he was a great practitioner; Varni ji's Sallekhana was completed at Isri in 1983.
