'Lest the father's death be spoilt, let love be play-acted': a husband and wife had long been quarrelling and lived apart; divorce was imminent. One day a letter came from the wife's father: 'Child, we now wish to go to Kashi for a sanyas-death; before that we wish to stay with you a few days and see that you live happily, so that our death may go well.' The wife came to her husband and said, 'Father is coming, and afterwards he must go to Kashi for his sanyas-death; lest his death be spoilt, let us live together a few days.' The father came, the couple lived lovingly, and when he left they both went to see him off at the railway station. On returning they began to part again, so the husband said, 'For the sake of father's death we could live together — can we not live together for the sake of our own deaths?' The wife said, 'When we do not get along, how can we live together?' The husband said, 'If we play-act at living in love, then love will gradually come.' So, out of fear of spoiling their own deaths, they began to live together.
