भील से भगवान् और मारीच से महावीर- जम्बूद्वीप के पूर्व विदेह में पुष्कलावती देश की पुण्डरीकिणी नगरी के मधु नामक वन में 'पुरूरवा' नामक भीलों का राजा हुआ, उसकी कलिका नाम की स्त्री थी। उसी वन में सागरसेन मुनि ध्यान मग्न थे। भील ने उनको मारना चाहा। स्त्री ने रोका, भील ने प्रभावित होकर मुनि से मद्यादि का त्याग किया। भील मरकर सौधर्म स्वर्ग में उत्पन्न हुआ, स्वर्ग से अयोध्या में भरत चक्रवर्ती की रानी अनन्तमति से ज्येष्ठ पुत्र मारीच हुआ। भगवान् आदिनाथ के साथ दीक्षित हुआ, फिर भ्रष्ट होकर परिव्राजक बनकर स्वर्ग गया, वहाँ से आकर करीब पाँच भव तक परिव्राजक होता रहा और स्वर्ग जाता रहा। उसके बाद असंख्यात भव तक त्रस-स्थावरों में भटककर ब्राह्मण हुआ, फिर परिव्राजक होकर पाँचवे स्वर्ग गया। सुरम्या देश के पौदनपुर में त्रिपृष्ठनारायण हुआ, वहाँ से मरकर सात वे नरक गया, वहाँ से सिंह बनकर प्रथम नरक गया, वहाँ से निकल कर फिर सिंह हुआ। अजितञ्जय, अरिञ्जय नामक रिद्धिधारी मुनियों के उपदेश से सम्यक्त्व प्राप्त किया, 'दस' भव बाद में तीर्थंङ्कर होंगे 'ऐसा श्रीधर तीर्थंङ्कर से मैंने सुना है'। मुनिराज ने शेर से कहा, शेर ने श्रावक के व्रत लिये और सन्यास पूर्वक मरणकर, पहले स्वर्ग में सिंहकेतु नामक देव हुआ, चौथे भव में धातकी खण्ड की पुण्डरीकिणी नगरी में राजा सुमित्र और मनोरमा रानी के प्रियमित्र नाम का चक्रवर्ती हुआ। दो हजार राजाओं के साथ दीक्षित हो बारहवे स्वर्ग गया, छत्रपुर में नन्दिवर्धन राजा के नन्द नामक पुत्र हुआ। सोलह कारण भावना भाकर तीर्थंङ्कर प्रकृति का बन्ध किया, फिर सोलहवें स्वर्ग गया, भरत क्षेत्र में विदेह देश के कुण्डलपुर में राजा सिद्धार्थ की प्रियकारिणी (त्रिशला) रानी ने सोलह स्वप्न देखे। फल पूँछा, गर्भकल्याणक, रत्नवृष्टि, नगरी रचना, आश्विन शुक्ल षष्ठी को, छप्पन कुमारी देवियों ने आकर सेवा की।

From a Bhil to God, from Marichi to Mahavir: in the Madhu forest near Pundarikini city of Pushkalavati in the eastern Videha of Jambudvipa, there was a Bhil king named Pururava whose wife was Kalika. In that forest the monk Sagarsen was absorbed in meditation; the Bhil wished to kill him, but his wife stopped him, and moved by the monk the Bhil gave up liquor and such. Dying, the Bhil was born in Saudharma heaven, and thence became Marichi, eldest son of Bharat Chakravarti by his queen Anantamati in Ayodhya. He was initiated along with Lord Adinath, then fell, became a wandering ascetic and went to heaven; returning, he remained a wandering ascetic for about five births, going to heaven each time. Thereafter, wandering countless births among mobile and immobile beings, he became a Brahmin, then a wandering ascetic and reached the fifth heaven. He became Tripristha Narayan in Podanpur of Suramya country; dying there he fell to the seventh hell, then as a lion to the first hell, and coming out became a lion again. Through the teaching of the miracle-endowed monks Ajitanjaya and Arinjaya he attained right faith — 'I have heard from Tirthankar Shridhar that after ten births he will become a Tirthankar.' The monk told the lion so; the lion took the layman's vows and, dying with sallekhana, became the god Simhaketu in the first heaven, and in the fourth birth became the Chakravarti Priyamitra, son of King Sumitra and Queen Manorama in Pundarikini of Dhatakikhanda. Initiated with two thousand kings he went to the twelfth heaven, then became Nanda, son of King Nandivardhan of Chhatrapur. Cultivating the sixteen contemplations he bound the Tirthankar-nature, went to the sixteenth heaven, and in Kundalpur of Videha in Bharat-kshetra, Queen Priyakarini (Trishala) of King Siddhartha saw sixteen dreams. Their meaning was asked; the garbha-kalyanak occurred with a rain of jewels and the making of the city, and on Ashwin Shukla Shashthi the fifty-six kumari goddesses came and rendered service.
