From Lord Mahavir until before Acharya Dharasena, the acharyas' study of scripture was oral; there was no need to commit it to writing. Six hundred and eighty-three years after Mahavir's nirvana came Acharya Dharasena, knower of one portion of the Twelve Angas, master of the eight great omens and of the science of script. Seated in the Chandra cave of Girnar it occurred to him that the capacity to retain knowledge was steadily declining, and if the available knowledge were not written down it would be lost. So from a nearby gathering of monks at Mahima city he summoned two disciples of Acharya Mahasena; Pushpadant and Bhutbali reached Dharasena, who told them to worship a mantra with a two-day fast. One mantra had a letter too few and one a letter too many, so to one appeared a one-eyed goddess and to the other a large-toothed goddess; understanding this, both purified the mantra and worshipped, and both succeeded. Recognising their brilliance, the Acharya taught them the scripture and, revealing his purpose, ordered the knowledge to be written down.
