The karma-mass bound in a single instant can have such a duration that it must be borne over innumerable births—just as one earns on market-day and lives off it for many days. One accumulates karma over many births and destroys it in a moment through austerity, just as one earns wealth over years and it all goes in a daughter's wedding or in illness.
