गुणस्थानों के उदाहरण- 1.मिथ्यात्व गुणस्थान- ज्वर पीड़ित रोगी को मधुर रस भी कटु लगता है, उसी प्रकार मिथ्यादृष्टि को धर्म नहीं रुचता है। 2.सासादन गुणस्थान- पर्वत के शिखर से गिरना भूमि के सम्मुख होना। 3.मिश्र गुणस्थान- दही-गुड़ के समान मिश्रित स्वभाव होना। 4.सम्यक्त्व गुणस्थान- फिटकरी युक्त स्वच्छ जल उपशम, पूर्ण स्वच्छजल क्षायिक, कुछ मलिन जल क्षयोपशम। 5.देशविरत गुणस्थान- सङ्कल्पी त्रसहिंसा से विरत तथा आरम्भी-उद्योगी-विरोधी एवं स्थावर की हिंसा से अविरत। 6.प्रमत्तविरत गुणस्थान- व्यक्ताव्यक्त प्रमाद, चितकबरे मृगवत्। 7.अप्रमत्तविरत गुणस्थान- अधःकरण, मोटी धार वाला आरा, यहाँ स्थिति बन्धापसरण (पाप प्रकृतियों की स्थिति का घटना) होता है। 8.अपूर्वकरण गुणस्थान- अपूर्वकरण परिणाम, पैनी धार वाला आरा, स्थिति काण्डक घात (पाप प्रकृतियों की स्थिति का तेजी से घटना) होता है। 9.अनिवृत्तिकरण गुणस्थान- तेज धार वाला छोटा आरा, कम समय में अधिक कार्य होता है। 10.सूक्ष्मसाम्पराय गुणस्थान- हल्दी से रङ्गे हल्के रङ्गीन वस्त्र के समान सूक्ष्म कषाय होती है। 11.उपशान्तमोह गुणस्थान- फिटकरी युक्त जल या शरदऋतु के निर्मल जल के समान परिणाम होते हैं। 12.क्षीणमोह गुणस्थान- स्फटिक के पात्र में रखे निर्मल जल के समान वीतराग भाव होता है। 13.सयोगकेवली गुणस्थान-केवलज्ञान अन्धकार नाशक सूर्य के समान होता है। 14.अयोग केवली गुणस्थान-शरद ऋतु की पूर्णमासी के चन्द्रमा की कलाओं के समान, शील के अठारह हजार भेदों का स्वामी एवं शुद्ध स्वर्ण के समान होता है।

Examples of the spiritual stages (gunasthanas): 1. Wrong-belief—as a fever-stricken patient finds even sweet juice bitter, so a wrong-believer takes no pleasure in dharma. 2. Sasadana—like falling from a mountain peak, facing the ground. 3. Mixed—a mixed nature like curd-and-jaggery. 4. Right-belief—alum-treated clear water is subsidential, wholly clear water is destructional, somewhat turbid water is destruction-cum-subsidence. 5. Partial restraint—abstaining from intentional injury to mobile beings, but not from injury that is occupational, industrial, defensive or to immobile beings. 6. Restrained-with-negligence—manifest and latent negligence, like a spotted deer. 7. Restrained-without-negligence—the lower process, a thick-edged saw; here duration-reduction of sinful natures occurs. 8. Apurvakarana—unprecedented states, a sharp-edged saw; rapid destruction of the duration of sinful natures occurs. 9. Anivrittikarana—a small very sharp saw, more work in less time. 10. Subtle-passion—subtle passion like a light-coloured cloth dyed with turmeric. 11. Subsided-delusion—states like alum-treated water or the pure water of autumn. 12. Destroyed-delusion—dispassion like pure water kept in a crystal vessel. 13. Omniscient-with-activity—omniscience is like the sun that destroys darkness. 14. Omniscient-without-activity—like the phases of the full moon of autumn, master of the eighteen thousand divisions of conduct, and like pure gold.
