'उपयोग' दो जगह आया है, 'उपयोगो लक्षणम्', 'लब्ध्युपयोगौ भावेन्द्रियम् एक में ज्ञान दर्शन लेना, दूसरी जगह क्षयोपशम लेना है, लब्धि के निमित्त से जो परिणमन होता है उसे उपयोग कहते हैं।

The word 'upayoga' occurs in two places, 'upayogo lakshanam' and 'labdhyupayogau bhavendriyam'; in one it means knowledge and perception, in the other it means destructive-cum-subsidential; the transformation that arises through the instrumentality of attainment is called upayoga.
