Inference is a kind of sensory knowledge and sign-knowledge is a kind of scriptural knowledge. Narad and Parvat were going through a forest; one said an elephant had passed, knowing it from the footprints; going on he said it was a she-elephant, blind in one eye, with a queen seated on it, pregnant, and would bear a son—all known by inference: the elephant from the large feet, the she-elephant from the urine, the one-eyed she-elephant from foliage eaten on only one side, the pregnancy from the weight pressed while descending, and the son from her descending on the right side.
